Real English place names are built from old words for landscape features: -ford (a river crossing), -by (a farm, from the Vikings), -wick (a trading place), -mere (a lake), -bury (a fort). Combine one of those with a colour, tree, animal or direction and you get names that sound like they have always been on the map.

Worldbuilding tips

  • Use endings consistently per region. Lots of -by and -thorpe suggests Viking settlers, -port and -mouth a coast.
  • Big cities can have short, old names; new villages can be more descriptive.
  • Add “Upper” and “Lower” for pairs of villages on the same river.
