The best dog names are short, one or two syllables, and end in a clear vowel sound like Coco, Teddy or Milo. Dogs pick those out from everyday speech much more easily than long names.
How to choose
- Avoid names that sound like commands. “Kit” sounds like “sit”, “Bo” like “no”.
- Try calling it across a park. If you would feel silly shouting it, keep looking.
- Live with a shortlist for a day or two and watch which name the dog reacts to.
